Jay-Z Sets New Marketing Trend

The key to success in any business is to be so innovative that you completely change the game. To find a way to market your brand in a way that no one else has ever thought of, to find ways to cross merchandise and align yourself with like minded companies. A perfect example of such success is Jay-Z. This man never ceases to amaze me. He is where he is today not only because of his talent but because of his amazing business sense and his ability to forecast trends and jump on them before anyone else.

I remember back in the day being so hyped for a new album by my favorite artist to come out. I couldn’t wait to go to the record store and buy it. I thought that the Internet and Youtube had spoiled that but Jay Z just proved me wrong. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Jay Z is a genius. He doesn’t reinvent himself with every album, he changes the rules, writes history, completely changes the game. He even figured out how to change the Recording Industry Association of America’s 55-year-old way of granting gold and platinum certifications. He had the amazing idea to sell one million digital copies of his new album Magna Carta for $5 each so everyone who owns a Samsung Galaxy S III, Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note II phone could download it for free along with their new app. This promoted the Recording Industry Association of America  to decide that artists will no longer have to wait 30 days to get their Gold or Platinum Certification, their digital downloads will count towards as soon as the album is released!

Talk about cross merchandising! It’s a win win for Jay Z and Samsung! Samsung gets their new app out and Jay Z goes platinum before his album officially drops. And if you go to you will feel that same old feeling of excitement you had back in the day before the next Public Enemy album was about to drop. I don’t know about you but I am excited!

Jay Z referred to the Internet as The Wild West right now, and he is so right! There are so many marketing possibilities on the Internet for every type of business. The possibilities are endless, so get out there and figure out a new way to market your business. Jay Z managed to sell one million copies of his album before its release date, change a 55 year old rule, and manage to get that old excitement back for his fans. Now it’s your turn.
